Day twenty-seven of the US-Israel war on Iran. And today... they killed the man who shut down the Strait of Hormuz.

Israel's defense minister confirmed it this morning — a "precise and lethal operation" in Bandar Abbas, southern Iran. The target was Commodore Alireza Tangsiri, commander of the IRGC Navy. The Washington Post, Al Jazeera, and Euronews all confirm it independently. Iran hasn't commented yet.

Now here's why this matters more than just another assassination. Tangsiri wasn't some symbolic figurehead. He was the operational commander behind the Strait of Hormuz closure — the single decision that sent Brent crude from seventy-three dollars to a hundred and twenty-six at its peak. That's the man. And now he's gone.

But killing him didn't calm anything down. It made things WORSE. Oil jumped four percent today — Brent hit a hundred and six dollars a barrel, up from ninety-nine yesterday. Because here's the thing — the Strait is still closed. And Iran's parliament, TODAY, started drafting a law to impose tolls on ships transiting through it. Not reopening it... monetizing it. Bloomberg confirmed the draft bill this morning.

Think about what that means. Iran is legislating permanent control over a waterway that twenty percent of the world's oil passes through. They're not negotiating access. They're building a toll booth.

Meanwhile, the diplomatic situation is... contradictory. Pakistan's foreign minister went public today saying his country's been relaying messages between Washington and Tehran — what he called "indirect talks." He confirmed the US sent a fifteen-point plan. Iran's answer came back through intermediaries and now they're waiting for Washington's reply.

But Iran's foreign minister says they're NOT negotiating. They're just... exchanging messages. Through a third country. About terms to end the war. But it's definitely not talks.

Iran's five conditions leaked — end the aggression, guarantees it won't happen again, war damages paid, comprehensive ceasefire across ALL fronts including Hezbollah and the Houthis, and recognition of Iran's sovereignty over the Strait. That last one is the deal-breaker. The US will never formally concede the Strait of Hormuz to Iranian sovereignty. But Iran won't reopen it without that guarantee.

Trump, for his part, told a Republican fundraiser last night that Iran is — quote — "begging to make a deal so badly, but they're afraid to say it because they figure they'll be killed by their own people." He also said military operations are "extremely ahead of schedule" against an original four-to-six week timeline.

But NPR spoke to two Israeli military officials today who said something different. Israel wants SEVERAL MORE WEEKS of war. They're actually speeding up strikes over the next forty-eight hours — specifically targeting Iranian arms factories — in case a ceasefire gets declared before they're done.

Now... the Russia angle. The EU's top diplomat Kaja Kallas went on record today with a direct accusation. Russia, she said, is providing intelligence to Iran to — her exact words — "target Americans, to kill Americans." Intelligence AND drones. The Guardian, Al Arabiya, CBS News all carrying the quote.

This is the first time a senior Western official has publicly named Russia as providing targeting intelligence against American forces in this war. Not just equipment. Not just moral support. Active intelligence to help Iran hit US military bases.

On the ground, the strikes are intensifying. Al Jazeera's correspondent in Tehran says attacks are "increasing in number and in intensity." Israel launched what it called a "wave of extensive strikes" on Isfahan — that's Iran's central military-industrial hub. The US says it's now destroyed two-thirds of Iran's missile and drone production facilities.

Iran fired two missile salvoes at Israel today, the second within thirty minutes of the first. Hezbollah launched rockets into Western Galilee. An Israeli soldier was killed in ground combat in southern Lebanon — twenty-one year old Sergeant Ori Greenberg.

And in the Gulf — Saudi Arabia intercepted over two dozen drones targeting the Eastern Province oil facilities. Bahrain reported a fire from what they called "Iranian aggression." The UAE said its air defenses are actively intercepting missiles and drones.

And then there's the money.

This morning's episode covered the five hundred and eighty million dollar oil futures trade. Since then, the story got BIGGER. Senator Chris Murphy introduced the BETS OFF Act in Congress — that's "Banning Event Trading on Sensitive Operations and Federal Functions." Washington loves a backronym.

Salon reports today that Polymarket and Kalshi both announced new guidance to guard against insider trading, but — and this is the part that matters — nobody knows how they'll actually enforce it. The CFTC, the body that's supposed to regulate commodity futures, currently has ONE commissioner out of five. One.

The numbers keep growing. A hundred and fifty newly created anonymous Polymarket accounts placed bets the night before the very first strikes in February. One single trader made a million dollars across multiple five-figure bets predicting US military action. Six traders combined made one point two million just hours before the February strikes began.
